Abstract

This study aims to discover the critical role of parents in shaping children's character and the possibilities that occur in children who are educated by single parents and substitute parents. The research method used is qualitative descriptive. Data collection methods used interviews, observation, and literature study. The sample in the research was selected by purposive sample. The research sample consisted of families with children educated by both parents, children educated by a single parent due to divorce or death, and children educated by substitute parents. The research results show that parents in the family, consisting of father and mother, play a critical role in realizing children's character education. Because to grow, children need a role model, both a father and a mother. Parents' incompetence in educating children affects the child's character. Children whom a single parent raises because of divorce are more susceptible to experiencing personality problems, especially in building self-confidence, than children who are raised by a single parent because of death. Therefore, other family members, such as grandparents, must support child care. However, the role of substitute parents without control from biological parents is more risky in shaping the child's character.
